Institutional Approach

Created in 2005 as an autonomous university under the umbrella of a large public university, the Intercultural University of Veracruz was motivated by a lack of representation of indigenous peoeples in Mexican higher education. The University aims to support access to education for indigenous populations - providing courses in indigenous languages - to promote local development and to provide a space for intercultural dialogue. It's main objectives cover these goals by putting a strong emphasis on fostering participation of indigenous communities, and educating students and staff to respond to societal demands. As a result, community engagement is one of the most prioritized sustainable development activities. While the University supports and contributes to the SDGs, it has also been an important voice challenging the framework, highlighting the lack of attention to cultural aspects.
