Institutional Approach

The Center for Sustainable Development is a permanent research and teaching unit at the University of Brasilia, which is engaged in societal partnerships for sustainable development in the region. Together with an eco-village and societal initiative, the Instituto Bioregional do Cerrado, the center engages in experiential and problem-based education for undergraduates around sustainability transitions. Classes for the undergraduate course “Sustainability Transitions and Grassroots Innovation Niches” are held in the eco-village and focus on both theory and practice. They proposition the eco-village as a transdisciplinary classroom, with a strong focus on allowing students to get in touch with sustainability narratives and values, new social practices, and new forms of social organization.
