The University of Tasmania’s core mission focuses on the cultural and environmental study and protection of the island of Tasmania, and they have made significant strides in advancing sustainability in their campus and operations. The university has embarked on a curriculum-wide reform called Education for Sustainability Community of Practice, which aims to embed sustainability as a key capacity of all graduates. This initiative has led to the formation of Education for Sustainability Tasmania, a Regional Center of Expertise. Integrated in this initiative is the Sustainability Integration Program for Students (SIPS), which provides opportunities for students to work on real-world sustainability challenges that they themselves either identify or align with, while advancing the university’s sustainability agenda. Participants earn payment or course credit for their contributions. Operationally, the university has a Sustainability Policy for the built environment, and a Green Bond framework to ensure campus is developed in the most sustainable way possible. They have also signed a pledge to become ‘Nature positive’- with specific biodiversity and natural targets for the campus and it’s other land holdings.Outreach to the greater Tasmanian population is also strongly built in to the University's agenda. For example, they have launched the Mobile Interactive Learning Truck program, an innovative mobile learning environment, which takes sustainability education around the island and directly into the community.
