Institutional Approach

Chalmers University is founded around the mission to use technology to contribute to sustainability; with education and research entirely focused on contributing to planetary health. As a Foundation University, it exercises freedom in organizational structure and funding. Amongst many initiatives are a transdisciplinary, challenge-based curriculum to address complex sustainability challenges- the so-called 'Challenge Lab'. The Challenge lab offers courses on leadership for sustainability and systems interventions for sustainability transitions, as well as a 'Master thesis lab', where thesis students work together on transdisciplinary sustainability projects in Gothenburg and West Sweden; students must connect projects, companies and public-sector initiatives with academia to propose and test sustainable interventions.
