Institutional Approach

Green Dragons is a student-led sustainability project at the City University London through which students are motivated by staff to deliver practical sustainability solutions on the campus and/or in the local community. The project is an example of a bottom-up student-led initiative supported by a top-down capacity building support structure that encourages sustainable behavioural change. In the project, teams of students obtain funding for collaborative sustainability projects. It is estimated that 25% of the university community has been directly or indirectly engaged with Green Dragons projects, resulting in a spillover of sustainable behaviours and student leadership empowerment. The university founded the 'London Student Sustainability Conference', a city-wide event and platform empowering and equiping students to become sustainability leaders. Staff are also encouraged to support sustainability via the 'Sustainable City Challenge', where staff teams or entire departments earn points for monthly challenges and/or their own sustainability projects.
