Institutional Approach

Gadjah Mada University (UGM) is a leading university in Indonesia in Environmental research. Student activism motivated the unversity's involvement in environmental conservation through community service. In 1971, the university started a Student Community Service Program, led by students and graduates, with a community service course a compulsory course for undergraduates since the beginning. The university has established multiple other sustainable development initiatives, for example the Kulitan Organization, an NGO engaged in environmental education activities for external societal and community members . In 2007, the Institute of Research and Community Service was established, facilitating, coordinating and conducting multi-disciplinary and collaborative research and community services at the university. UGM's mission states that meeting the needs of the rest of the country, and particularly those of the community should be the university's highest priority.
