Institutional Approach

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology's sustainability approach is centered around the Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change (KAT). The KAT runs transdisciplinary research projects combining research, education and societal partners, particularly with respect to the energy transition. Since 2012, the KAT has been running the District Future – Urban Lab. This educational project seeks to transform an entire urban district of Karlsruhe into a sustainable living lab with decentralized and renewable energy generation, and has been showcased as an exemplary university:society partnership for urban sustainable development.
