Institutional Approach

Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Finland, focuses all institutional activities on technological solutions to climate change. Their areas of study are clean energy, water, and air through both engineering, social science and business approaches. As indicated in their Trailblazers 2030 Strategy: Science; the university is focused on influencing seven of the UN's SDGs through four pillars that form the "system earth": air, water, energy, and business and society. In terms of sustainability education, LUT University has incorporated a variety of compulsory sustainability courses, programs, and themes throughout their curricula. Their climate action plan uses the metric of a “positive environmental handprint” rather than environmental footprint – focusing on the positive impacts of the university’s activities on society.
