Institutional Approach

Middlebury College is a small liberal arts college with campuses on two coasts of the USA. Their central approach to innovative pedagogy is based around students as compassionate agents of change. Throughout their studies, students develop four ‘fluencies’: solving the climate crisis, analysing data, transforming conflict and understanding cultural differences. Experiential learning is a core tenet, supported by the Center for Community Engagement, which pairs students with a wide variety of community partners involved in community support and sustainable development. Their ambitious Energy 2028 plan charts the path towards a circular campus as fossil-fuel divestment for the college.
