Institutional Approach

The Monash Sustainable Development Insitute (MSDI) uses the SDGs as a framework to guide all their institutional work, including research, education and impact. Their work is focused around leadership for the SDGs, climate action, sustainable cities and regions, environment & health, circular economy, and inclusive prosperity. They have developed and work from the "MSDI Systems Transformation Toolkit", which acts as a set of guiding principles for transdisciplinary research. The MSDI is also a global hub for SDG reporting and innovating leadership, particularly higher education leadership, to acheive the SDGs. In this theme, they host the regional hub of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and are the lead author of the University SDG Guide. Monash’s landmark operational sustainability initiative is ‘Net Zero’, an alliance between the institute and industry partners to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. The initiative includes a ‘Net Zero Solutions Fund for Living Labs’ to accelerate research, education and community engagement around achieving the net zero goals. Monash is also set to become Australia's first 100 percent renewable energy powered university.
