Newcastle University's Institute for Sustainability has a strong research focus on environmental justice, and considers social justice a core mission of the university. This is overseen by a social justice advisory group, a social justice fund focused on development in the surrounding community and community-wide social justice forums. The communit social justice forums invite members of the university community, city planners and voluntary/community service NGOs. Research on sustainable futures has involved the development of an innovative art-research design process; a case-study output being the participatory design of a fictional new town capable of radical climate change adaptation.
