Institutional Approach

Northumbria University, England, has developed a Knowledge Transfer Partnership platform to accelerate sustainability transitions and aid in innovative sustainability projects. Businesses and organisations are paired with a graduate to develop and execute transdisciplinary, participatory sustainability projects, supported by university faculty. For example, local projects on regional carbon-free energy grid transition and architectural design of social housing projects have been carried out in recent years. Northumbria also embeds Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into the entire curriculum by designing all degree programs according to the “Programme Framework for Northumbria Awards”, an internally generated design framework with ESD and student co-production principles.
