Institutional Approach

Nottingham Trent University takes a two-pronged approach to whole-institute embedding of sustainability: the estate and the curriculum. Estate initiatives include a carbon-free campus, embedding biophilic and natural elements into biodiverse urban and suburban campuses. University students and staff can also earn 'Green Rewards' by logging their sustainable activities and initiatives. Nottingham Trent embeds sustainability into the entire curriculum using their 'Curriculum Refresh framework', introduced in 2016, where all undergraduate and graduate courses are reviewed against a 7-point framework for environmental responsibility and sustainability. The Green Academy team is tasked with embedding Education for Sustainable Development into the curriculum in collaboration with the Sustainable Futures Research Group. Specific schools within the university have also redeveloped curriculum with a focus on sustainability; the Nottingham Business School redeveloped curriculum to explicitly link sustainability to employability outcomes for students.
