The Fahua campus of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University has established a design process for the top-down implementation of a carbon-free campus. Carbon emissions reduction and carbon sink implementation were combined to deliver a plan for campus transformation. Notably, the social (i.e. diverse interests of campus user needs) and ecological (utilising available natural resources) dimensions were integrated into the design process in achieving carbon neutrality, in addition to various technological dimensions. This was combined to form a "Carbon Neutral Smart Services Platform" for use at both the Jiao Tong University and for replication on other campuses. The university also has a College of Smart Energy within the Faculty of Engineering, as well as a Carbon-neutral innovation center, both geared at university-industry collaboration for the transition to carbon-free socierty. Jiao Tong has also formed a joint initiative with the University of Edinbourgh called the 'China-UK Low Carbon College'; a center for education, research and post-graduate training around carbon transitions.
