The Umwelt campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences, in Germany, is considered Europe’s first zero emission campus, built in 1996 on the site of a former military reserve hospital. CO2-neutral campus operations are provided from solar, biomass heating and wind. Furthermore, the university is fully oriented around environmental education: all research and education is future-focused around the two interdisciplinary themes of environmental planning/technology and environmental economy/law. They have also adopted Education For Sustainable Development as a guiding principle for all courses of study
