The institutional mission and vision of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon focuses on the sustainable development of humanity, where schooling, and environmental education in particular, is seen as the most imporant vehicle towards sustainable development. The university also focuses on place-based research surrounding environmental issues in northeastern Mexico at the Center for Environmental Research and Sustainability. The institutional sustainability governance approach involves a Vice Presidency of Sustainability and a Sustainability Secretariat, which is tasked with policy development, educational programs and the development of sustainability community networks within the university, as well as operational environmental management. Translating the strong sustainability governance into action, the University Academy for Sustainable Development functions as a university-wide knowledge network to ensure sustainability is embedded into all aspects of the university.
