Institutional Approach

The Universidad Pontifica Bolivariana (UPB) is the first certified Carbon-free and zero-waste university in Latin America. They operate the first smart-grid of its kind in Colombia across its campuses, allowing for the efficient use of renewable energy resources across their main campus, the so-called 'EcoCampus', which is also studied and operated as a living lab for students. The university also purchases carbon credits for the reforestation of degraded agricultural lands in Colombia. Sustainability and comprehensive education are core principles of the university's model. They have also taken steps to incorporate Education for Sustainable Development into creative disciplines, such as architecture and clothing design.
