Institutional Approach

The University of Calgary, Canada, prioritizes the involvement of regional and local communities in their sustainability plan, by approaching these as a learning partners. Sustainability is highly embedded into education with a particular focus on applied practice and place-based solutions, and learning (living) lab activities. Calgary offers a Certificate in Sustainability Studies that can be integrated into any undergraduate degree curriculum at no extra cost, and provides a transdisciplinary curriculum intended to generate foundational sustainability knowledge, design thinking and research methods. Learning lab activities inlcude green building conversion projects, organic waste management, and affordable housing. Students can also take a Certificate in Mental Wellbeing and Resilience which supports students to be agents of change within their communities. Via this course, students are partnered with internal and external university stakeholders to develop a wellness intervention toolkit called 'Ecological Grief and Climate Anxiety' for use within the university community and beyond.
