Institutional Approach

UC Merced is the first public research university in the US, and the first institution in the UC system to achieve Carbon Neutrality, with a dedicated governance office for Energy and Sustainability, functioning within the office of the president. UC Merced has established the Triple Net Zero Goals: a set of goals for the campus to ultimately produce as much power as it uses, create zero landfill waste and achieve climate neutrality. Their staff, faculty, and students have contributed to resource conservation through participation in institutional practices; including a strong zero-waste and sustainable campus agriculture program which also functions as a site of experiential learning. The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability is responsible for coordinating and advising university operations on all matters related to sustainability.
