Institutional Approach

At the University of Hawaii Kapi’olani, the guiding principle and metric of achievement is the ‘student success pathway’ – an ethos which seeks to provide open access to education for Hawaiian natives and to close success gaps between indigenous Hawaiians/Pacific islanders and non-marginalized groups. A key goal within this success pathway is to equip students as future sustainability and cultural leaders of Hawai’i, integrating indigenous philosophy and sustainability as mutually inseparable values. Kapi’olani also offers a certification that gives any student the opportunity to earn the equivalent of a sustainability minor, while meeting general education requirements.
