Institutional Approach

The University of Limerick has a unique and innovative structure to tackling sustainability at the university and in the surrounding community. They set out multiple pillars of action supporting its mission-based strategy to acheiving the SDGs, which is still in implementation phase. This includes a Mission Lab, led by a Citizen's Mission Council, intended to foster active citizenship and external engagement. The Mission Lab sets out a variety of specific individual missions, such as generating a carbon-neutral and biophilic campus, pioneering a transitions framework for higher education in Ireland, and the implementation of a mission-driven learning curriculum. The university has also designated itself as a 'University of Sanctuary', with specific programs to facilitate access to education and services for refugees and migrants.
