In addition to comprehensive circular campus and living lab initiatives, The University of Malaya, Malaysia, has experimented with an approach to cultivating a culture of sustainability amongst all university students and staff. The 'heartware' approach involves generating indicators and facilitators of internal and voluntary motivation of the campus community, with the aim of establishing long-term collaboration and collective efforts for sustainability. They have also applied this concept to community sustainability projects, such as local water management, leading to the development of an interactive citizen science tool for community-based water quality monitoring called the Eco-Heart Index.
