The University of São Paolo (USP) is a multi-campus university and one of the largest higher education institutes in South America, with nearly 100,000 students. In 2012, USP integrated sustainability into their governance structure via adoption of the ‘Superintendence of Environmental Management’, with the objective to promote environmental sustainability. The Superintendence structure incentivizes university community members to engage with sustainability initiatives such as campus retrofits, new buildings and sustainability strategic plans of the university. They also engage in widespread sustainability training for faculty, technical and operational staff in socio-environmental intervention competencies, with the aim of internalizing sustainability in university management and operational culture. The Superintendence governs the Environmental Master Plan, where each campus carries out local sustainability pathways and projects. Goals that are formulated through this management structure include the reduction of carbon emissions and the development of the university as a living lab for cities.
