The University of Sussex’s sustainability strategy covers four transformative pillars: ethical educators: embedding sustainability into all aspects of student learning; decarbonising the economy: achieving net zero by 2035; civic leaders and partners: making the university's supply chain, partnerships and output more sustainable; and environmental champions: making campus more sustainable by e.g. promoting recycling, waste management, sourcing sustainable produce, and engaging staff and students to bring their own sustainable visions and strategies. They have an ambition to become the most biodiverse campus in the UK, by setting aside 42% of the campus for nature and implementing specific efforts to protect endangered and threatened species. A key driver of sustainability thought at the university is the Institute of Development Studies' STEPS Center. Amongst other projects, they developed the Future Natures project, a living resource to blend art and stories to facilitate commoning practices, as well as a resource of sharing stories and articles focusing on degrowth and sustainability thought and research practices. The STEPS Center's Pathways to Sustainability also developed their sustainability summer school into a freely available online course.
