The University of Tübingen is a thought and practice leader in a whole-institute approach to sustainability. Their central Competence Center for sustainable development, and the associated research body “SD@UT” acts as a central body responsible for organising and implementing institution-wide sustainability efforts, in close collaboration with six other higher education institutes with Germany. For example, they carry out energy and operational audits and are responsible for the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development across the entire curriculum, with attention paid to accommodating a plurality of voices and approaches. They also organise network-wide meetings for staff and students, enabling stakeholders to define and act on diverging visions for sustainable development. The development of the Competence Center was initially underpinned by a comprehensive institutional mapping project, where the breadth of sustainable development activities, the competencies of the university community and areas of urgency were assessed. The Center is also a direct result of student-led efforts: the student sustainability group was initially responsible for the installation of the institutional Board for Sustainable Development in 2010, the university body which reports to the president’s office on Sustainable Development.
