Western Washington University embeds place-based living, education and learning as an underlying operating principle. In 2008, a Sustainability Academy was formed to inventory existing sustainability education initiatives at the university and design new curriculum proposals for an interdisciplinary sustainability approach. This led to the formation of the Sustainability Engagement Institute, a consolidated approach to embedding place-based sustainability education at the university. The Curriculum for the Bioregion Initiative works with faculty, leaders and experts throughout the bioregion to build sustainability concepts and place-based learning into a variety of undergraduate courses. This curriculum is not a single "add-on" course, but rather a collection of classroom activities that engage students with concepts of sustainability and issues in their regional bioregions and beyond. The approach to integrate sustainability in the curriculum consists of four components; course redesign, engaging faculty learning communities, the Washington Center's curriculum integration approach, and curriculum for the Bioregion's faculty learning communities. Outreach activities support sustainability education in kindergarten and grade-school classrooms in the region, centered around a learning farm. These initiatives are undertaken by the Sustainability Engagement Institute, which develops a variety of educational opportunities for sustainability transformation. The institute is also responsible for convening and steering the President’s Sustainability Council, which ensures implementation of the university’s Sustainability Action Plan.
