York University demonstrates a comprehensive commitment to sustainability in its whole-institution approach, integrating sustainability into administrative practices, operations, curriculum, and research, and promoting the university's core values of social justice and equity. Within the university community, four core sustainability paradigms were developed during a process of co-developing sustainability imaginaries with the university: sustainability as performance, governance, techno-efficiency, and community organizing. These imaginaries were then used during a process of reflection on the implementation of a high-level university council on sustainability and an energy management program. As part of their Academic Plan 2020-2025, the university established the "York SDG Challenge," employing a bottom-up approach emphasizing self-education, knowledge dissemination, and the cultivation of a versatile skill set, all aimed at facilitating meaningful engagement with the SDGs.
